Chocolates
Chocolates are mood-enhancing, but are also waist-expanding. Holistic nutritionist Yondi Lee recommends healthier alternatives that work just as well to lift your spirits during tough times.

Bananas and Oats
Both have tryptophan, an essential amino acid in the production of serotonin, which has  a calming effect. They are also a source of vitamin B6, which converts amino acid in protein to dopamine and adrenaline. These chemicals tend to boost your mood.

Brown Rice
Wholegrains such as brown rice are complex carbohydrates, which slow down the release of insulin in your body, thus balancing your blood sugar level. A stable blood sugar level keeps your cortisol (stress hormone) intact.

Kailan and Broccoli
They are packed with  folate, magnesium and calcium, all of which are important for brain chemical conversion to lift your spirits.

Mackerel and Salmon
Oily fish contain Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) fatty acid, which studies have shown to alleviate mood swings and reduce depression.
